Munduk Moding Plantation

Pursuing social aims, all staff is Indonesian, and the construction was undertaken primarily by local teams supervised by the internationally experienced Munduk Moding Plantation crew.

In their approach to sustainable tourism they give the right of way to locals on the eastern side of the plantation (near the staff quarters) where century-old paths lead to the valley, maintaining access for locals to a traditional source of water and its shrine on the plantation so that they can continue to fetch water and bathe.

“We always wanted to create something beautiful that would further economic development in the south and be a genuinely positive force for all those involved.”

– Irene, the founder of Munduk Moding Plantation –

Wastewater is treated in two gardens where it is broken down and cleaned; you can visit them on site. All organic waste is composted in our composting center and used on our land whilst the rest is recycled.

They do not use plastic water bottles and have reduced the use of plastic as much as possible.

Growing coffee organically requires shadow trees, which attract a wide variety of birds and stimulate the growth of many indigenous plants and flowers.

Designed by award-winning Balinese architects Popo Danes and Era Anastasia, the villas and suites at Munduk Moding Plantation marry key features of Balinese architecture with a modernist tradition adapted to the environment of this hilly station.

An indoor shower with sinks for him and her and an outdoor shower in a private garden filled with flowers allows for rinsing the body in nature.

What makes Munduk Moding Plantation special

Shortly after opening the Munduk Foundation was set up in 2010 as an informal foundation to support the local community. It introduces high-end tourism to an untouched part of the island to support the environment, the people who work at the hotel, and the local community.

Coffee Processing 4 By Dayu SriIt provides scholarships to poor bright students to finish high school and continue education on higher levels. The people at the foundation believe that education is a right for everyone.

The foundation contributes 2,000 coffee seedlings to the local farmers every year and invites coffee specialists to train the farmers to improve knowledge of producing the best coffee.

The foundation works with the village to remove plastic dumps and hazardous waste; it has provided waste bins to the village allowing waste to be sorted and therefore more safely processed.

The foundation contributes 1,000 trees to the neighbourhood every year to preserve its natural beauty and protect the water tables.

Its support is closely coordinated with the local community, notably the ADAT (the traditional village hierarchy) and the head of the village.

We offer activities included in the price of your room, a daily program from which you can select activities that appeal to you – if you do not want to simply enjoy the natural environment of our plantation on your own.

  • A Balinese kite making and flying class – kiting is one of the main sports in the Bali hills.
  • A workshop explaining Balinese attire and how to wear it: men wear the sarong, saput, and udeng, ladies the sarong and the Balinese wraparound scarf.
  • A Gansing twister workshop which explores this traditional sport and gives you a chance to play it with our staff.

In addition to the activities we offer you a guided morning trek on the plantation of about 45 minutes at which they explain the many flowers, plants, and crops, and take you to the vegetable garden, the forest, and a spring.

In the afternoon you will be served tea and coffee with homemade Balinese cake at the pool.

In the evening we offer a movie program at the upstairs lounge where some of the best nature productions are shown on a large screen.

Meanwhile they will light a bonfire outside – you are welcome to join us in sitting at the fire with a drink, listening to the cicadas, and looking at the distant lights near the shoreline and the fantastic night sky filled with countless stars.

This is truly one of the best experiences you can have.
