The Jogja Hip Hop Foundation (JHF) represents a transformative force within Yogyakarta’s music industry, comprising a talented group of artists who have redefined the city’s musical landscape.

The JHF is composed of a dynamic quintet of rappers and beatmakers: Kill The DJ, M2MX, Rajapati, Ki Ageng Gantas, and Balance.

Emerging onto the scene in 2003, the Jogja Hip Hop Foundation (JHF) represents a fusion of hip-hop with rich Javanese culture and traditions. The group comprises rappers, music producers, DJs, and dancers committed to addressing social issues through powerful lyrics and energetic rhythms.

On two separate occasions, the JHF has embarked on an extensive one-month tour in the United States. Their journey, replete with unforgettable experiences and stories, was immortalized in the fascinating pages of “Java Beat In The Big Apple,” an enthralling book penned by visionary founder of the JHF, Marzuki Mohamad, a.k.a. Kill The DJ.

Some of our lyrics were taken from Javanese traditional poems, literature, or mantras. We rewrite and give some contemporary contexts to it for better and easier understanding for our generation today. Anyway, if you don’t understand our lyrics, that’s not my problem, because it’s also hard to understand you too, America!

With a mischievous glint in his eye, Kill The DJ playfully uttered those words as they started their performance in America, which was greeted with laughter by the audience.

The Jogja Hip Hop Foundation is dedicated to maintaining local cultural identity.

Their lyrics skillfully combine both Javanese and Indonesian languages, crafting an unparalleled Jogja atmosphere and rhythm that exudes authenticity.

JHF goes beyond language and lyrics to embrace their cultural heritage on a deeper level. They frequently use traditional Javanese instruments such as gamelan and kendang in their compositions, giving them a distinctive touch that sets them apart from conventional hip-hop groups.

Beyond their music

The Jogja Hip Hop Foundation actively takes on a greater responsibility – that of community building and empowering the younger generation in Yogyakarta.

They often hold free workshops, discussions, and performances to spread awareness about the importance of art and education. JHF is also involved in various charitable and social advocacy activities, seeking to positively impact the surrounding community.

In 2012, JHF also received the “Duta Nagari Ngayogyakarta Hadinigrat” award from Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, who is none other than the King and Governor of Yogyakarta Province.

The Jogja Hip Hop Foundation has not only achieved success in bringing hip-hop music infused with local nuances to a national audience but has also won international acclaim for their distinctive artistry.
