Calypso Diving Bali is a dive centre built upon an aware community of divers, free divers, and local fishermen. All of them have one thing in common – a love for the sea and a desire to keep it a live and protected. They are well known for establishing the first and largest coral nursery to help restore the local coral reef ecosystem.

Coral Gardening in Amed

The Ocean is returning to us, what we put into it.

If you look at the beaches here, you are literally walking on tiny plastic particles. “It‘s time to do something about it, right now! ”

Calypso Diving Bali starts from the basics of life

The corals – solid and fragile, they live in our waters. Through fun diving and educational programs, they want to spread awareness and knowledge for a better future. Teamwork is essential, and therefore their work is based on cooperation and support with and for the local community of Amed, Karangasem, Bali.

Blue School & Calypso Diving

In November 2020, during Covid time, the Calypso Diving team gave a path to an educational project for the local kids called “Blue School Bali” in the Lipah area, where the coral restoration project is.

“There is a great need for education among the kids since the school are closed since January 2020. “

Those kids have a big challenge ahead. The majority of the Oceans Plastic debris is coming from rivers and roads.

That‘s why at the „Blue School Bali“, landscapes are also an important topic. We explain to the kids that everything non – biodegradable left behind on the top of the mountain will go into the rivers and eventually into the Ocean.

This is also quite frequent and evident during the rainy season.

Together we work on finding solutions & alternatives to plastic that can be implemented immediately. “Our method is based on non-formal education, and we do our activities playfully and mindfully as the average is between 7 and 15 years old.

The first phase was quite successful, and we will start the Second phase soon with new kids”. “Thanks to our sponsor and individual donations, Blue School Bali is still free of charge program. We really hope that we can continue keeping it in this way.”

What is Calypso Diving teaching?

The students get inspired by learning more about the world and its interrelations and general geography. We teach them about the Ocean‘s ecosystem, the continents, how they relate to everything, and teach them about plastic as a reality and a problem making them find solutions.

As the Fishermen in Amed say: „The plastic eats the fish away”

“It‘s time to do something about it, instead of complaining about where the plastic and rubbish come from. We all have to move in the same direction.“

Calypso Diving team said.

The priority is to educate local people and western expats on the importance of a naturally clean environment. Clean ups have been a key point for Calypso Dive for the last two years.

They have been collaborating with a strong and young anti-plastic movement, Trash Hero Amed. Calypso team believes that education is the only tool to make a difference.
