Originally started by a group of young idealists from Belgium advocating for sustainable tourism,
ViaVia represents family and social engagement.
As part of a travel agency dedicated to social, cultural, and educational projects, ViaVia focuses on real encounters between travelers and locals. It’s about sharing cultures and making the world a better place.
Led by individuals with grand visions like Mie, a photographer, graphic designer, and mother of two teenagers, ViaVia exemplifies how small actions can yield significant impacts.
In 1995, Janti felt drawn to ViaVia. She started as a guest and has been a big part of ViaVia Jogja since 2020. Janti found happiness because of its focus on real connections and helping the environment.
Unlocking Power and Strength
Talking about empowerment, Janti believes that everyone possesses unlimited potential. She says being true to yourself and staying dedicated are key to achieving your goals. Mie agrees, highlighting the importance of personal growth in overcoming challenges and realizing dreams.
Shaping Women Empowerment
From the outset, ViaVia consciously employed an all-female staff and clientele, amplifying women’s voices in an unconventional move for the tourism industry. Despite facing challenges and criticism, empowering women and breaking traditional stereotypes remained a priority. Educational programs funded by ViaVia’s profits have led to remarkable transformations, showcasing the power of investing in women’s education and empowerment. By providing opportunities and support, ViaVia has witnessed remarkable growth and positive change within its team. For instance, one former cleaner now holds a PhD in civil engineering from a Japanese university.
How do you stay true and grow?
Janti emphasizes trusting the process and learning from every experience, advocating for adaptation to different situations and drawing lessons from each one. Mie concurs, acknowledging the complexities of societal expectations, particularly in the age of social media. She suggests taking breaks from social media to focus on personal growth and intuition, encouraging individuals to remain true to themselves and their beliefs.
How does community and collaboration shape your perspective of women empowerment?
For Janti, the experience extends beyond personal growth. Since moving to Jogja, she has felt a stronger sense of community.
“It’s like living in a big village, where I collaborate with local makers, crafters, and artisans. Our interactions aren’t just about money; they’re about mutual support. For example, I might need tempeh or vegetables from farmers, and they need a place to sell their products. By organizing weekend markets, we all benefit.”
Mie adds, “Sometimes it feels like we’re fighting invisible obstacles, but connecting with
like-minded individuals makes it all worthwhile. It’s an exciting journey, and the time is right for it.”
In the global network connecting people and cultures, women play a crucial role in empowering communities and fostering inclusivity.
Mie emphasizes the need for women to step into leadership roles and be empowered to lead. At ViaVia, women lead in various units, not necessarily because they were trained for it, but because they’ve grown into these roles with support and encouragement.
Janti highlights the organic growth of individuals within ViaVia, noting their loyalty and performance over the years. Opportunities for advancement are provided within the team, allowing individuals to step up and lead in bigger and more exciting capacities.
Despite potential educational barriers, Janti believes in the wisdom and shared values that enable individuals to succeed and even start their own businesses. This approach fosters a supportive environment where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Balancing economic, social, cultural, and environmental factors
ViaVia’s focus on sustainable tourism contributes to creating a fair and open world
Mie elaborates on ViaVia’s commitment to sustainable tourism, which encompasses fair wages, community-based initiatives, culturally sensitive tours, and environmental considerations like waste management and plastic reduction.
Collaboration with partners, including UNESCO, promotes intercultural understanding and supports local communities. Mie emphasizes the importance of responsible leadership in creating a fair and open world for all.
