March – April 2023

Born in the wild and untamed jungles of South Sulawesi, Ibu Sari’s sotry starts with her childhood, that was unlike any other. Surrounded by snakes, monkeys, and wild creatures, she faced hardships and obstacles throughout her young life.

Economic troubles forced her family to move from place to place, leading to a childhood of constant change and separation from her loved ones. She married young, faced domestic violence, and fought to regain custody of her daughter. Even then, life continued to throw obstacles in her path. Following a painful divorce, Sari was back at her parents’ home, struggling with depression.

“I didn’t know where to go and what to do. I knew my family loved me, but they couldn’t help me and didn’t know what to do.

In Bali, when you have problems, it starts with offerings, ceremonies, purifications, shamans, and healers. One after another. I visited so many holy Springs until I felt holy shit!

bali banida ibu sari's story

As I walked through the streets of my village, I couldn’t help but feel the weight of the gossip and judgment that seemed to follow me everywhere I went. It was suffocating, and I knew I needed to break free from that small-minded community.

I made the bold decision to leave and pursue an education. I became a teacher and threw myself into my work, trying to forget my struggles and the loss of my daughter.

As fate would have it, I found myself surrounded by other women who were also struggling. As we supported each other and shared our stories and emotions, we began healing. I realized in this process that the more we shared, the more it helped me resolve everything I had been through, and I knew that this understanding could help other women too.

I realized that I had a mission – to empower other women to break free from our society’s taboos and begin their own journey of healing.

The universe still had more planned for me

“Before I could truly begin to heal, I needed to learn to confront my inner child and ground my chakras. As I did, that’s when the opportunity presented itself; An English teacher approached me, asking if I would like to teach children with special needs. I had no experience, but I knew this was the next step in my journey. It was a challenging road, but I was ready. I learned to observe these children, understand them, and build trust with them. They taught me how to be grounded and find happiness in the present moment.

Through them, I realized that all my challenges were my greatest teachers. My challenges fertilized my growth, just like the earth nourishes a plant.

We are all connected, and we all have a purpose. Each of us is a part of the greater universe and the cycle of life. We must honour and respect our ancestors, nature, and animals and believe in the power of karma and reincarnation. No one is born bad, but society can shape us in ways we forget ourselves. It’s important to remind ourselves to be true to ourselves, understand ourselves, and feel deeper.

Through my journey, I learned that the universe has a plan for all of us, and it’s essential to trust in the journey and embrace the challenges that come our way because those challenges shape us and make us who we are.”

Sari’s words speak just like her actions.

The place she has created and meeting this delicate yet strong woman was incredibly fascinating. I’ve summarized a lot, but if you can, it’s almost a must to go there to hear what Sari has to say. I don’t want to reveal any more; visit her and find out for yourself.
