“I am from the same background as the people I support. Which is why I feel obliged to help the people in my community because I know their situation. It’s past time for me to repay this community.”
A little over a year ago, Anggie Wayan set a goal for herself: to get one ton of rice for her birthday. She posted her birthday challenge on Instagram and Facebook, and two weeks before her birthday, she had already collected 1.5 tons of rice. Rice for Bali was born.
Anggie told us more about herself
I like the abundance in my life. I want to feel good. I want value in my life, and I have this now. It is not about money or material things. It is the feeling of being free.
When my life is just flowing, I cherish it. When I help people, I feel free in my heart and soul.
This is who I am, and that’s what I want.
“There are a lot of good people in this world, and we are all connected.”
Since April 2020, I have contributed more than 50 tons of rice.
I have distributed it to 58 villages in Bali’s north and east, as well as 28 orphanages. More is on the way.
Every day from 9 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., I deliver rice to the villages. Sometimes I have to drive four times a day, but that’s fine. I look forward to seeing everyone’s bright smiles.
I want to help as much as I can. That is my aim. But only for those who need it.
Foodbank.co and nakormimbali, are supporters of my project, Rice for Bali.
“I don’t see how much money the people donate to Rice for Bali, but I see how much love and kindness they share with us.”
When the donors ask me how much they should spend, I don’t want them to feel obligated. I tell them, “Simply do what you can.”
Trust is a big responsibility.
Every day, I receive 40 messages on social media. But I won’t support a village if I don’t know its economic background. I have a team that goes around to the villages and meets the families first.
I have a huge responsibility to the donors to make sure their money is spent wisely.
Every month, I go to Canggu to meet with all the donors of Rice for Bali.
As the recipient of their donations, donors can select either Rice for Bali, House for Bali, Bike for Bali, or Clothes for Bali.
I buy rice from a local factory, which gets it from local farmers.
Supporting and strengthening local businesses and people is fundamental to me.
House for Bali
When I first started visiting the villages to bring them rice, I saw the huts where these individuals reside. They were constructed from the materials found in the villages. I planned to build houses for them.
Since June 2020, I’ve built 10 houses, each with its own bathroom.
Bike for Bali
Education is the most important thing in life.
Bike for Bali is intended for kids who live in rural areas. Walking to school takes a long time for the kids in these villages, but having a bicycle makes it a lot easier. I’ve already provided eleven bicycles to those kids.
Clothes for Bali
I received a big clothing donation, which I gave to the residents of the village.
In addition, I help people in need by providing wheelchairs and diapers.
I love taking on new challenges, and I always get more than I bargained for.
For example, for my birthday this year, I organized a charity dinner.
I set a target of getting two tons of rice in four hours, and I ended up with 5.6 tons.
My intention for the Independent Day Challenge was one ton of rice, and I ended up with 3.6 tons in five days.
It is appropriate to request aid from others. Everything I do is documented on social media. Instagram is a fantastic platform. I believe that using social media wisely can be useful.
I believe everyone has the ability to help others in need.
Before starting all of my challenges, I worked for almost 14 years with an Australian foundation.
In the end, it was too much for me; I slept barely two hours at a time since I overthink everything.
Following that, I began a free English program for the village’s kids. They only had to provide plastic trash to pay the teachers before the weekly class begins. Then the pandemic struck, and we were forced to close the school because all of my English teachers were volunteers from across the world.
After all of that, I began my Birthday Challenge, and my life was forever transformed.
That is my life, and it is exactly what I want.
I’m honoured that people have put their trust in me to distribute their donations. Having so many wonderful people in my life is indeed a blessing.
“When do you have time for yourself?” my friend continues to inquire.
I have some free time in the evenings, so before going to bed I answer and respond to all the emails I have received.
I am already cheerful when I get up in the morning.
“I am proud of myself because I decide and live my life wisely, and I have to show this solely to myself”
Thank you for the interview, Anggie. What an inspiring personality. A genuine Bandita.
This is exactly what we’re looking for! It’s known as SELF-LOVE – the greatest experience in the universe! Anggie is determined to make sensible decisions in her life. Such decisions benefit many people. It’s incredible what one person can accomplish, and even more so when people work together. “Be the world’s change you want to see.”- Gandhi.
