Amed – The Divers Paradise in Karangasem East Bali
The diving and snorkeling paradise in Karangasem, East Bali, is simply no longer an insider tip. The picturesque fishing boats called „Jukung“ are well known in this area. Amed is one of the small sleepy fishing villages that stretch along the coast in small bays: Amed, Jemeluk, Bunutan, Lipah, Lehan, Selang. As Every village has its own character. Compared to the south, the sea here is rather calm, no big surfer waves, but fantastic for diving and snorkelling, swimming, beach walking and strolling or discovering the hills with beautiful views.
Coastal trip through Karangasem East Bali
Why not take a scenic tour to Amed by scooter or in your own car along the coast? From Ujung an asphalt and easily passable road leads along the coast through Seraya, Bunutan to Amed. The view is truly spectacular, the vast ocean, the steep coasts with old lava flows, a completely different landscape than the lush rice terraces.
15 km northwest of Amed a worthwhile diving and snorkeling area. The main attraction is the wreck of the Liberty. The war-torn by Japanese submarines torpedoed in World War II by Japan submarines was put here on the beach when it threatened to sink. 1963 the lava flow of The Agung pushed the Liberty back into the sea, up just below the water surface. Today, it is 45% tilted on its side and is considered to be the most easy to dive wreck in the world. Be the early 1980s the Liberty is regularly dived.
Over the years, the small village of Tulamben became a diving mekka. Because not only the Liberty is an underwater attraction: Soon the divers discovered the „Paradise Reef“, the „CoralGarden“ and the „Drop off“.
Jasri Village – Real Amlapura
Jasri Village a hidden gem that has a lot to offer. Bathing in the “Tirta Ujung”, a holy water temple, a tropical dream, surrounded by coconut palms, papaya and banana trees. The spring water is clear and clean and is also used for ceremonies. Trekking or helping with the harvest in the rice fields, surfing, snorkeling, fishing, weaving fabrics and much more.
FIRE WAR!!
Every two years, two days before Nyepi, the traditional ritual, “Ter-Teran”, a fire war takes place in Jasri. People meet in the main square in the village and throw fire at each other.
Oka says: “Only people who have a pure heart and pure thoughts go to the fire war, they don‘t mind the fire.”
Lahangan Sweet Viewpoint
It’ s a popular local insider spot not to be missed is “Lahangan Sweet”. This tourist destination is located in Bajar Gulinten, in the village of Bunutan Karangasem. Lahangan Sweet is surrounded by natural beauty with breathtaking views of Mount Agung. The approach route is very steep and very bumpy at the end. Only suitable for good drivers. But the return trip is a lot of fun, all down-hill.

Karya Sari Warna Alam
On the coastal road to Amed, you pass the small village of Seraya. This is known for its local weaving tradition, providing employment for local women, and traditional product with its natural materials. The tools and materials used in making raw colour materials are still traditional and straight forward. 
The primary natural colour is produced from arum plant (Indigofera tinctoria ), palm, noni, pomegranate, idawayah (woodfordia floribunda salibs), secang(Caesalpinia sappan), and also use other natural colours such as iron stain.
Joli Best View Café
A small, cozy warung in Jemeluk on the hillside, with a direct view of “Jemeluk Bay”. The food is freshly prepared and tastes great. In the background, chilled reggae sound or live music by Joli, the host or the guests themselves plays. Insider tip: sunrise or sunset. Dreamlike.
Definitely worth a stop.
