There is beauty in simplicity. One perfect example lies on the island of Nusa Lembongan.

There is something Mediterranean about Nusa Lembongan. Turquoise waters that lead to white sand beaches and sloping houses enclosed by scenic greenery greet us from afar. A wonderful sight. We set foot on the island’s northern side, at Pelabuhan Jungut Batu, after which we traversed its slithering tree-shaded paths to get to our destination: Morin Resort. The sun was striking, and yet, there was a warm and gentle breeze that embraced the ocean-front resort.

This pleasant ambience could be attributed to the resort’s open-space concept, which extended from the welcoming lobby to the inviting dining area and continued to its homey accommodations. Nestled on five levels, the rooms featured a minimalist design that avoided being bland or boxy. Instead, they exuded a luxurious and charming atmosphere, incorporating the rich beauty of antique teak wood throughout.

“We try to keep it simple but also playful and back to the roots of the island,” says Oria, founder of the Morin Resort. “We keep the space open because we want to keep the energy alive and dynamic.”

There are 12 bungalows in total, each constructed with local sensibilities, such as the two-storied family room styled like a lumbung (local harvest storage). Meanwhile, the exquisite Ocean Suites

with their breathtaking and uninterrupted ocean views, create a truly idyllic retreat, perfect for couples seeking a romantic and serene getaway.

Educational Trips

Once you settle in at the Morin Resort, you might be reluctant to venture elsewhere.

With its picturesque ocean view and spaciousness, the yoga shala feels like a slice of heaven. Alternatively, you can indulge in pure relaxation by lounging by the pool, soaking up the serene atmosphere.

If pool dipping is not your thing, there are two beautiful beaches nearby: Tamarind beach is conveniently located along the route to the resort. While Coconut beach is just a five-minute walk through lush foliage away.

For those with a passion for the sea, there are many activities to partake in at the Morin Resort. Surfing, snorkelling, and sunset cruises with delightful on-board dining are just a few options available.

If you prefer a more personalized experience, you can arrange private boat transfers or even create a customized combination of activities. Notably, their manta trip stands out, as it offers the expertise of a marine biologist who will enhance your sun-soaked adventures with valuable educational insights.

The Playful Table

Another highlight of the Morin Resort is its exceptional cuisine, crafted by Chef Made Masak. Keeping up with the latest culinary trends, the chef prepares delectable dishes, including plant-based, gluten-free, and the use of locally sourced ingredients further enhances the dining experience.

One particularly delightful aspect is Made’s playful approach to gastronomy, constantly exploring new flavours and techniques in the kitchen. To add a touch of excitement to your meal, you can even order the “Surprise Me” dish, which promises a surprising and playful presentation.

Her Caul Me Baby (crispy cauliflower with homemade BBQ sauce) is a savoury delight, while the Captain Jack wrap (perfectly layered pulled BBQ jackfruit, spinach, cherry tomato, pickles, rucola, and homemade miso mayo) exemplifies her commitment to supporting and promoting local produce in her culinary creations. The wrap, normally from imported wheat-based flour, is now made from cassava native to the island. Meanwhile, her bread is baked with rice or sticky rice flour that she makes from scratch.

“I want to share ingredients that have been feeding the people of Lembongan for so long,” says Chef Made from Morin Resort, “I want to celebrate what we have. So, I want to share a piece of Lembongan with you.” For sure, we can’t get enough of it.

Honouring Legacy

A black and white photograph of two men above the open-space lobby piques my curiosity. Who are they? The photograph depicts the friendship between Oria’s late father and Made Monoh, a landowner and Lembongan native, that dates back to the 70s. The photo captures the essence of enduring friendship and the transformation of friends into family, symbolizing the true spirit of the resort.

“The resort stands on three pillars—the ocean, food, and feeling of home,” Oria says. “We want to create a space that is about connection and a sense of family. And everyone is welcome to join and to grow together.”
