Wisdom Keepers Reigniting the Ancient Ways

At a time of profound Turbulence and Change, Wisdom Keepers reflects a reassuring light from the fires of the world’s ancestral and indigenous cultures.

Wisdom Keepers encourages us to take a breath, remember, listen and take stock of the remaining human cultures and people that retain their connection, that respect it, honour it and cultivate it.

Most of us live in cities and societies that have concreted over the natural world, paving way for commodified, industrialised, synthesised ‘progress’.

Living in a somatic illusion of abundance and dopamine gratification yet increasingly waking up to the reality and horror of mass extinctions and weird, threatening weather patterns.

At times it can seem like humanity has taken a wrong turn and failed Mother Earth and all the life and beauty she holds within an apparently deserted universe.

In our colonised capitalist dopamine daze it’s easy for us to lose sight of the extraordinary richness of human heritage and wisdom that is alive on the planet, intimately woven in balance with nature and her mysterious energies and cycles.

These are the Wisdom Keepers; elders, leaders, grannies and grandpas from the four corners of the planet holding the threads of their traditions, keeping the fires of their ancestor’s insight burning for their children and grandchildren and the seven generations to come.

Wisdom Keepers was established in 2015 by Ben Christie as a project to bring an experience of indigenous earth-based traditions into western festival culture.

In recent years the project has been developed under the guidance of filmmaker Jeremy Whelehan who in one form or another has been filming and working with indigenous cultures for the past 20 years.

Through his films Jeremy shares the voices of the worlds remaining Wisdom Keepers across social media platforms reaching a growing audience of millions every month.

The Mission

As the project grows beyond the concision and limits of social media, it has begun to guide the audience into deeper engagement through the Wisdom Keepers Podcast with a future television series and a book on the horizon.

“My goal as a storyteller is to move people through feeling, through heart energy,” Jeremy explains.

“Facts and figures can inform, but they rarely touch the depth of our spirit. It’s through heart-centered storytelling that we can truly inspire change.”

Wisdom Keepers is on a mission to collect share, and safeguard our remaining oral traditions for future generations.

To create a comprehensive archive of these cultural treasures, that can serve as a source of guidance, truth and sustainable inspiration and learning in the challenges we face today and for the challenges we leave for future generations.

Its legacy will be a vital anthology of the planets remaining ancestral and oral traditions.

“We need to create a seed bank of oral traditions, a comprehensive anthology that future generations can turn to,” he says.

“As our planet faces unprecedented crises, this wisdom is our lifeboat, guiding us through turbulent times.”

Wisdom Keepers encourages new pathways and channels of influence for this ancestral wisdom, dusting it off from a colonial perception of primitive and redundant perspectives.

Reminding us of the vitality and necessity of indigenous human principles as we attempt to stabilise our dying world and forge a sustainable and hopeful future.

The concept of infusing our modern world of innovation with the consciousness and awareness natural law.

” We are at a pivotal moment “

The prophecies of many traditions speak of this time of transformation.

The old ways resist change, while new paradigms are being born.

It’s a challenging but fascinating time to be alive to see how we can bring this world into alignment with the full spectrum of human imagination, innovation and insight.

Transformative Power of Storytelling

Heart-centred storytelling is at the core of Wisdom Keepers’ work.

“We need to move beyond cold facts and figures. The stories we share need to touch people’s hearts, to make them feel and relate on a deeper level,” he asserts.

Through the emotional power of stories, Jeremy aims to inspire people to look beyond their own boundaries and recognize the interconnectedness of all life forms.

“We must begin the transformation from within.”

Healing our relationship with ourselves and each other is crucial if we are to heal the natural world. This inner transformation is most essential for the healing outer world that we must now undertake.”

Reflecting on Our Actions

Human beings have lost their connection with nature. Many children in Europe and America think carrots come from the supermarket. Our relationship with everything has been packaged and commodified, sold to us for convenience.

We need to understand that we are borrowing the world from our descendants, not inheriting it from our ancestors.

Reflecting on our actions and their consequences is a fundamental part of the project.

Wisdom of Indigenous Cultures

The Wisdom Keepers project is more than just a collection of stories.

It is a movement aimed at raising awareness about the profound wisdom of indigenous cultures and fostering a deeper connection to nature.

“These traditions hold a depth of wisdom and an intricate relationship with nature that industrialized societies have lost. Our mission is to nurture, celebrate, and amplify this amazing human heritage.”

Jeremy sees this wisdom as both ancient and living, evolving through specific regions and biospheres.

“There’s so much depth and intricacy in these cultures.”

I hope we are beginning to wake up to the importance of nurturing and celebrating this incredible human heritage—an immense repository of wisdom, culture, tradition, and principles of understanding, compassion, empathy, and love.”

Trust is crucial

The work Jeremy does is sensitive and relationship-based, therefore trust is crucial.

“As an Irishman, I relate in some ways to the challenges that colonized cultures face and the great loss of tradition and identity they face.“

His mission is to build this project to grow sustainably, creating partnerships and collaborations necessary for its expansion.  Jeremy is very passionate about reaching those who might not already understand the importance of indigenous wisdom.

“I want to move people in surprising ways, to open them up to new perspectives”

Messages from people who have never experienced indigenous traditions but find truth in his work are what drive him.

“It’s all about listening,” Jeremy concludes. “Anything that can soften hearts and reach through to others is beautiful and has the power to move hearts and inspire change.”
