Today we take you on a little Ubud Culinary Journey! Did you know that Ubud isn’t only the artistic and spiritual, but also the culinary centre?

We, from Instant Karma have chosen the following locations because we feel that their culinary choice, quality, and variety is exceptional. Especially now in this situation, compared to other well-known gourmet places, they are entrepreneurs with a certain “Gusto” and they love what they do.

We drove our motorbikes through the lively streets of Singakerta to Peliatan. I love it when it’s already dark, there’s an entirely different atmosphere than during the day, and everywhere along the street, there’s the smell of food like Sate, Babi Guling, Gorengan, Lalapan and much more that the local heart desires.

RISE BALI

Hungry, we arrived at our final destination, the restaurant “Rise” in Peliatan. Rise offers Mediterranean delicacies from Turkey. Everything is freshly cooked and prepared with love by Asli, the owner of Rise. Rise Bali only uses its own products, yogurt, tahini, pickles, pita bread, turkish delight & more.

Her traditional cooking and secret recipes come from her grandparents and parents, who run a restaurant in her hometown Bodrum.

Asli moved to Bali two years ago with her 5-year-old daughter and husband and opened Rise in Ubud in September 2020. With the different Mediterranean delicacies she offers, the choice wasn’t easy, but the anticipation was all the greater.

  • Babagannus (grilled eggplant and peppers, garlic, parsley in olive oil)
  • Humus
  • Carrot-tarator: (yoghurt with carrots, garlic and olive oil)
  • Tzatziki
  • Kibbeh, those are fried burghul balls with beef and the Chicken Tantuni Wrap

Everything was freshly prepared and served with homemade pita bread—a feast for your taste buds.

Happy and complete, we decided on dessert. How could it be otherwise, baklava-oh yes, and oh my god, I have never eaten such good baklava. Of course, the original Turkish coffee, which was served with the original Turkish copper cup, was not to be missed.

Conclusion:

Guys, what can I say? It was just MEGA DELICIOUS! A variety of small dishes and delicacies with authentic Turkish dishes that you definitely have to try!

Baklkavaaaaaaaaaaaa, and the luck is perfect.

Another day, we were out with Cynthia, a young, upbeat and beautiful jazz singer. She has been living in Ubud for 6 years. We met not long ago at Sindhu Beach in Sanur. I took the opportunity to call her and asked if she would like to show us a bit of Ubud.

The first thing Cynthia asked us at the meeting point:

Pho Soup – Green Lotus

” Are you guys hungry? Have you eaten anything yet? I am so hungry, and I want to show you my new favorite place where I recently ate the best Pho soup. You know, its not just the food, the philosophy of the man who creates the delicious meals is absolutely worth a visit.”

After a short ride we had arrived in Penestanan. I read that the first hippies were seen here in 1969 and that the Dutch painter Arie Smit lived here by the end of the 50’s. He founded the Young Artists School, which is why the place is called The Village of Young Artist. After that, the area prospered; more Balinese came here to learn painting, healing, and magic.

GREEN LOTUS BALI

There are countless small restaurants and we entered the “Green Lotus”.

A simple but super delicious vegan contemporary warung. No milk, no honey, and no egg. The owner of the Green Lotus, a philosophical, bright spirit, greeted us in a friendly way and at the same time, he was delighted to see Cynthia again.

After we enjoyed the yummy and healthy food, we had a very nice talk with the owner. If you’d like to know more, read his article ‘A thought from Green Lotus’.

He told us, that when you’re eating, there is a none voice communication between human and Mother Nature.

When you eat, the energy from the food is directly going into your body, into your mind, into your spirit, and into your soul.

Their message is the food here. They bring happiness, health, and that’s how they bring more joy. When people eat more vegan, surely there will be fewer killing of animals.

Green Lotus brings the message: Know who you are.

Afterwards, we drove a bit further through the winding roads, jungle left and right, to Nyuh Kuning.

Nyuh Kuning is village next to the monkey forest with its own character, that’s where we stopped at the Old Friends Coffee Place. Again, Cynthia’s eyes sparkled, and with her charming smile, she said:

“Watch out, guys, here you get the best coffee and the best banana espresso shake with pure cane sugar.”

And she was simply right.

OLD FRIENDS COFFEE

We sat for a while and enjoyed our drinks in this peaceful place. Suddenly Made, the owner of the Old Friends Coffee, came around the corner.

I just had to do a little interview

Made is born and raised in Belantih, which is located near Mt. Batur in the Kintamani highlands region, not far from Ubud.

“I grew up working on my family’s farm. When I was a child, we lit kerosene lamps at night because electricity was not available. We lived a simple life surrounded by beautiful mountains.

With my café, I want to support the coffee farmers in Kintamani. I don’t do a lot of marketing. I just try to show what I do and the work and people behind it.

The most proven marketing for me is Mother Nature; she brings the right people to my café, beautifully chosen by the universe.

I didn’t want to be a farmer, so I worked in tourism and learned English at the same time. Then, one day I noticed a disbalance, and I suddenly understood the dedication and joy of cultivating and farming the land.

I am proud to be a farmer from Kintamani, where I grew up – and I am proud to share the fruits of the earth. This corona time makes me more confident, and I trust in this what I am doing.I just work, authentic and straightforward, and I go with the flow of the nature of life.”

His family is cultivating various strains of Coffea arabica by hand and without any chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Every coffee bean is handpicked only when it’s really red and ripe, then they dry the beans on wood, about 1 meter in the air.

This causes the beans to keep their full aroma.

Old Friends Cafe is a wonderful calm oasis with excellent coffee direct from the family farm, roasted on site and carefully hand selected bean by bean.

We love the genuinely caring philosophy of the owner. The little village of Nyuh Kuning is extremely fortunate to have a top-class coffee house such as Old Friends…
