I used to refer to sound healing as another placebo spiritual practice. It sounds (pun intended) like it could be helpful. I was taken aback to discover the effects of sound healing are scientifically proven.

We have gotten used to the idea that massage is helpful for both our mental and physical states. Sound therapy is basically massage that is delivered through different sensory receptors.

A wealth of convincing research supports sound healing for the reduction of both physical and emotional pain. In one study, the University of California researchers discovered that using Tibetan bowls to aid in meditation significantly reduced tension and rage, especially in those who were new to the practice.

The advantages of sound for health are also supported by meta-analyses.

The use of binaural beats to reduce anxiety has been supported by evidence from 30 different studies, according to researchers from the University of Bonn in Germany. Additionally, researchers found that playing and listening to music is associated with enhanced general mental and physical health after reviewing 400 studies.

There are multiple ways you can go into a sound healing session.

As a young and healthy person, I can’t judge the body-healing properties of this practice. For me, it was a rather spiritual experience. At the beginning of the session, we were asked to come up with a request for the session.

That’s the most exciting moment. It feels like you’re making a wish that must come true. I thought I wanted more power to stay aligned with my newly discovered self. With that in mind and a stuffed eye mask on my face, I covered myself with a blanket and plunged into darkness and silence.

After some time, the silence was broken by a soft voice and long gong sounds.

The music, which was created by different instruments, was soft in the beginning but got louder. As the instruments changed, sometimes a whole melody was created and at others, only separate sounds. I could feel my breath and heartbeat tune in with the sounds or rather, the frequencies produced by the instruments.

It was like a deep meditation; however, my thoughts didn’t stop for a moment. It was a patchwork of images, ideas, and feelings. I felt strong with the powerful vibrations from the gong, whereas the flute gave me a light feeling of relaxation. After the session, I stepped out into the sunlight feeling confident about myself and my actions. It’s almost like I was tuned in to something greater than myself. Something that helped me sense the most of my potential.

Even though I had such a vivid and empowering experience, there were other people snoring quietly, such was their state of relaxation. I believe some people get into a meditative state during sound healing sessions. It depends on your current mood and probably your intention. No matter what kind of experience it is, sound healing will affect you in the best way possible for you personally at that exact moment. The only thing you have to do is show up and listen.
