The Journey to Serayu Pot

My adventure began unexpectedly when I visited my visa agent’s office to renew my visa. I saw a fascinating picture of a man with a distinctive beard hanging in the office of my visa agent, a passionate photographer. I asked my agent about the person in the picture.

He explained that it was “I Wayan Cameng,” a renowned artist from Ubud. Intrigued by the story behind the image, I decided to meet this fascinating individual. With an address in hand, I set off for Peliatan Ubud. I immediately said, “This picture is awesome; who is this person?”

He said, “Oh, that’s “I Wayan Cameng”, an artist from Ubud. My agent gave me his address because I really wanted to meet this man behind this impressive face. I got the address, and soon I was driving to Peliatan Ubud.

Colourful Terracotta Shop

The colourful terracotta shop with hand-painted hanging pots, was hard to miss. It looks really cool.

First Impressions of Serayu Pot

As I arrived, the colourful terracotta shop immediately caught my eye. Hand-painted hanging pots adorned the exterior, creating a vibrant and inviting atmosphere. I walked toward the shop and was greeted by the sight of the “fattest Bali-dog” lounging on the floor, accompanied by a smiling woman and the man with the most fascinating face in Bali.

Meeting the Family Behind Serayu Pot

My Bahasa Indonesia was too bad, as was his English.

So they said to me: “Go to the first floor, there is our daughter Jay, if you have any questions, she can tell you everything about our shop and us.”

Due to the language barrier, the woman directed me to their daughter, Jay, who was on the first floor.

Steep stairs led up; I wondered how this dog makes it up here every day…

At the top, I found an open working space complete with a coffee and bar area. Jay welcomed us warmly, and after explaining why we were there, she shared that many people visit because of her father’s intriguing presence.

The Artistic Evolution of Serayu Pot

Jay explained that Serayu Pot initially specialized in handmade pots for Balinese ceremonies. However, as demand waned, her father began artistically painting the pots and displaying them outside the shop. These vibrant displays attracted attention, turning the shop into a local landmark.

We entered an ideal open working space, with a coffee & bar. Jay was there; we introduced ourselves and said why we were here.

Jay had to laugh and told us that we are not the only ones who come here because of her father, but the only ones so far who ask if we can take a picture. Usually, people take photos without asking; also a world-famous brand, they took a photo of my father and used that for their new campaign.

Serayu Pot used to make and import handmade pots for Balinese ceremonies.

Suddenly, the demand was too small and the warehouse too full of terracotta pots. So, my father started to paint these pots artistically and hung them in front of the shop or placed them one after the other. A beautiful eye-catcher that attracted many people to the shop to buy some.

Get Your Hands Dirty – It’s Fun!

In response to the evolving market, Jay transformed the space into a creative hub. Now, visitors can enjoy a coffee while working in the office space and try their hand at making and painting their own pots, plates, and cups. What was meant to be a short visit turned into a delightful afternoon as I signed up for a pottery class. Although it was challenging, it was a lot of fun for both my daughter and me.

The current situation makes many people more creative, like Jay, she opened a coffee, office and working place and next to it you can try to make and paint your own pots, plates, and cups. Our visit, which was supposed to be a short one, went on for a bit longer, and it ended by me signing up for a pottery class. It looks a lot easier than it is, but it was a lot of fun for my daughter and me.
