Mau Kopi?
While new coffee shops pop up like mushrooms in Denpasar, one coffee business closes at the same time. Nevertheless, the Indonesians are passionate coffee lovers. Cafe Bhineka Djaja and its house brand of coffee “Kopi Bali” is one of the most famous and oldest in Denpasar. And with its privileged location right on Jl. Gajah Mada is definitely a highlight too.
When it first opened in 1900 it was called Bian Ek, it was simply a store selling coffee from Indonesia and became the number one coffee in Bali.
In 1935 it underwent a transformation and became the Bhineka Djaja by Mr. Djuwito Tjahjadi. Soon the coffee business was handed over to the third generation in the form of Wirawan Tjahjadi, one of Mr. Djuwito’s sons.
With the addition of tables and decorations it quickly became a popular meeting spot for people, intellectuals, writers, journalists, and artists of the period and still is today. People sip coffee, read the newspaper, exchange ideas, and talk about life.
Aromatic coffees are available from Bali, Toraja, Sumatra, Brazil, Colombia, and other places.
The company buys only from local suppliers. At the same time it looks very inviting and customers like to stay for several hours and can watch the hustle and bustle of the street. Coffee beans from Indonesia and other parts of the world are roasted onsite and there is a little art display at the café with artwork painted with coffee and other unique things from the colonial era to see.
The café is open from 9 a.m. until 4 a.m. every day.
