Kintamani & Batur Area should be your next destination! It is like diving into another world. Active and explosive. The Kintamani Batur Area is the heart of Bali and the origin where everything began. All the locals say this when they welcome you.

The panorama is impressive, with the caldera all around, in the middle of it the active volcano Mount Batur and of course the Batur lake, the biggest lake in Bali.

We immediately fell in love with this place, with the whole landscape and the magic that surrounds it.

The Batur Temple is the largest temple in Bali dedicated to the God Vishnu

Pura Batur, a beautiful, large temple built of black lava rock, is worth a visit about one kilometer in the direction of Penelokan. Pura Ulun Danu Batur is one of the most important temples in Bali which acted as the maintainer of harmony and stability of the entire island. Pura Ulun Danu Batur represents the direction of North and is dedicated to the god Vishnu and the local goddess Dewi Danu, the goddess of Lake Batur, the largest lake in Bali.

Until 1926, the village Batur was located at the foot of the volcano Batur. In 1917, the volcano erupted for the first time in the 20th century and buried the whole village under lava.

Thousands of people died, 60,000 houses and 2000 temples were destroyed.

However, the village temple of Batur was spared from destruction. The survivors considered this a miracle and decided to rebuild Batur on the same spot. Only nine years later, the next eruption occurred. This time the temple was buried under the lava masses as well as the newly built village.

But only one shrine could be saved, the Dewi Danu, the goddess of the lake.

So the village community moved to the crater rim in 1926. The shrine was integrated into the new temple. The inauguration ceremony of Pura Batur took place on 14 April 1935.

Even today, a big ceremony is celebrated in April to commemorate the occasion.

The whole area around the volcano Batur was declared part of the Global Geopark Network by UNESCO in 2012 due to its geological uniqueness.

 Lake & Volcano Batur

The region around Gunung Batur is one of the most spectacular landscapes in Bali. More than 10 km in diameter and about 600 m high all around, a vast crater houses the large lake Danau Batur and the volcano.

Within this caldera are several villages, including Toya Bungkah, agricultural fields and gigantic lava fields. On the rim of the crater, there are several villages. Those on the western side are connected by the Bangli – Singaraja road, those on the eastern side by a narrow and spectacular road that ends at Terunyan. Mount Batur is still one of the most visited tourist destinations and for good reasons.

The sunrise view from Mount Batur’s peak is one that should not be missed.

From the 1717 m high and still active volcano summit, there is a fantastic panoramic view on a clear day as far as Rinjani on Lombok.

Mt. Batur is a lively volcano: between 1804 and 2000, there were 26 eruptions recorded by volcanologists. It is believed that Batur has been active for 26,000 years.

If you spend a few days here, you will experience a very different Bali than in Ubud or Canggu, for example. But even a day trip will give you new impressions.
