Imagine A Truly Sustainable Resort

Smart Technology makes it all possible, today. Will it help us turn this dream of a truly sustainable resort into the reality it deserves to be?

Avatar of Bonnie Lucille

You’re zooming across clear, azure waters on your way to a top-rated eco sustainable resort – the first of its kind. You and the captain are conversing at a normal volume, with only the subtle purr of the electric boat engine and the tropical winds to speak over – winds that are pollution-free, smelling fragrant and blessedly fume-less.

Arriving at the resort, you marvel at the elegant integration of solar panels into the structures and buildings. Many of these panels provide a comfortable shade along the pier as you unload and walk towards reception.

On the way, you take in the vertical wind turbines humming in hypnotic orbit, looking more like moving sculptures than power plants.

At check-in, the receptionist excitedly invites you to take a deep inhalation.

As you do, they explain there are zero toxic fumes in the air here since, in place of the usual polluting diesel generator sets, this resort only uses batteries charged by the sun and the wind.

How would a truly sustainable resort feel?

After the welcoming breath, they proudly introduce you to their energy self-sufficiency, which eliminates monthly fuel bills and ensures a consistent and reliable electrical supply, despite the remote locale.

You’re never told to turn off your AC when leaving the room, because energy is plentiful and derived entirely from clean and renewable sources. The receptionist invites you to download an app to your phone, one which lets you track and control devices in your room – not to save energy, but to pre-set things like your AC or private jacuzzi.

In the process, you gain a deeper insight about your energy habits which positively influences an edit to your more inefficient routines in the real-world.

You’re having so much fun playing with this new app you almost miss the polite honk of your electric buggy transfer. Along the way to your room, you once again relish the silence afforded by electric transport and spend time admiring the lush gardens, listening to bird song and breathing the pure air scented by frangipani and gardenia.

Your driver explains how each resort building was constructed as sustainably as possible – from rammed earth, recycled materials and regeneratively harvested wood. Still, all construction comes with a carbon cost.

To subtly educate guests about this reality, each building’s entrance is enshrined with a placard revealing its construction emissions, emission off-sets to-date (via local mangrove restoration), and net lifetime emissions.

You’re happy to see most net totals in the negative.

Everything in your room comes in reusable packaging, including toiletries, which are made by local women using native botanicals, affording them an empowering financial independence for their trade.

You sample the sweet-smelling shampoo in a shower that uses harvested rainwater. After, used gray water disappears down the drain to be repurposed as food for the resort gardens via a highly efficient drip irrigation process.

At dinner, you’re stunned by how satisfying the mostly plant-based, prix fixe menu is.

Every delicious morsel was either grown on the property or sourced locally – again via a positive economic exchange with local farmers and purveyors. Food waste is fed to local cows and pigs, the remainder is used for compost.

Once finally back on the mainland, you feel bombarded by the sound and smell of combustion engine motorbikes and cars. All of it intoxicates your lungs and induces a constant headache.

How did none of this bother you before?

The inanity of living this way is suddenly as clear to you as the crystalline waters you left behind – especially when the solutions are available now, the benefits of which extend beyond preserving a natural paradise to preserving your very own peace, health and wellbeing.
