A century as the capital of India

Just a century ago, the British moved the seat of their empire from Kolkata to Delhi.

It has been the capital of India ever since. Now a thriving, cosmopolitan metro, Delhi has much to celebrate as it has already reached the milestone of completing 100 years as the capital.

With a history that goes back many centuries, Delhi showcases an ancient culture alongside a rapidly modernizing country.

The city is dotted with monuments, offering much to discover.

The seat of many powerful empires in the past, its long history can be traced through its many carefully-preserved monuments, ancient forts, and tombs.

THE PAST AND PRESENT

Delhi combines the best features of a modern city, such as a metro system, bustling markets, and fabulous eateries. The past and the present meld seamlessly, making centuries-old monuments a part of daily life.

Delhi’s history is as old as the epic Mahabharata when the town was known as Indraprastha, home of the Pandavas.

Over the centuries, eight more cities emerged adjacent to Indraprastha: Lal Kot, Siri, Dinpanah, Quila Rai Pithora, Ferozabad, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad, and Shahjahanabad.

Many empires, including the Tughlaqs, the Khiljis, and the Mughals, rose to power and were destroyed here.

Exploring Old Delhi

Even today, Old Delhi offers a fascinating glimpse into the past with its labyrinth of narrow lanes, old havelis, and colourful bazaars. Rickshaws wind their way through this crowded, bustling area, where life continues much as it did hundreds of years ago.

Home to three World Heritage monuments—Qutub Minar, Red Fort, and Humayun’s Tomb—Old Delhi provides an idea of the architectural wonders created by past emperors.

Central Delhi, with its tree-lined avenues and imposing structures such as the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Parliament House, and India Gate, reflects the city’s colonial past.

Numerous museums offer a glimpse into the country’s fascinating history.

Modern Delhi

A well-planned and extensive Metro network connects all corners of the city and continues to grow. New roadways and flyovers have improved connectivity, including the Signature Bridge, an ambitious project under construction at Wazirabad.

New malls and entertainment centres jostle for space with a growing number of brand-new hospitals, residential complexes, and sporting facilities.

Delhi is now a medical tourism dream destination for those seeking expert medical attention with superior facilities.

CHANDNI CHOWK MARKET

While the famous landmarks are unmissable, Delhi’s true essence often lies in its hidden corners. Head to the bustling lanes of Chandni Chowk, but don’t just stop at the surface. Chandni Chowk is one of the oldest and busiest markets in Old Delhi, India.

It is located close to the Old Delhi Railway Station. Visit the Paranthe Wali Gali for a taste of traditional stuffed parathas, or step into the tranquil oasis of Ghalib Ki Haveli, a lesser-known historic residence of the celebrated poet Mirza Ghalib.

Respect local customs

Delhi’s cultural fabric is woven with traditions and customs. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites, and remove your shoes before entering temples and mosques. A polite greeting of “Namaste” is always appreciated.

At some places, they want you to enter the house bare-footed, in order to keep the dirt out of their house, please do so as well.

Connect with the locals. The people in central Delhi are more commercial than people in the villages. So, develop your sixth sense and assess the genuineness of an individual before trusting them and following their words.
